Alumni Spotlight: Alejandra Hernandez '18,'19
Alejandra Hernandez never planned to stay in one lane. Her career has taken unexpected turns, each shaped by her determination, adaptability, and a deep commitment to helping others. From earning two degrees at 天美传媒 to working in healthcare and education, she鈥檚 proved that growth comes from embracing change.
As a first-generation college student with a disability, she knew she needed an affordable path that allowed her to work full-time while earning her degree. She found that and more. While in the Medical Assistant program, she served as secretary for the Medical Assistant Student Knights (MASK) club and was chosen to speak at her pinning ceremony. 鈥淔or me to have completed the program despite people questioning if I should pursue it or not due to my physical disability. It was a moment I will never forget,鈥 she said.
After four years as a Certified Medical Assistant, working in departments like Neuro Rehab Physiatry and Endocrinology, Alejandra felt a calling to education. She鈥檚 now back at WVC, this time as a Program Assistant for the Transitional Studies department, where she helps students build their English language skills and pursue new opportunities. 鈥淚t鈥檚 truly rewarding to witness students progress in their language skills and pursue careers they never thought were possible,鈥 she shared.
Between working full-time, raising a five-month-old son, and completing her bachelor鈥檚 degree in Healthcare Administration, Alejandra also dedicates time to advocacy. She鈥檚 spoken on panels about disability inclusion in outdoor spaces and participated in research on improving pregnancy healthcare for black and latina/x individuals with disabilities.
Alejandra鈥檚 advice for current WVC students is clear. 鈥淵ou no longer have to stay in one career for the rest of your life. You have the power to keep learning, evolving, and expanding. Don鈥檛 let others dictate your path. The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it from you."
